On Mistranslation in Howard Goldblatt’s Version Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out and Chinese Cultural Translation Strategies

Abstract: Mo Yan’s works become the best seller overseas depending on Howard Goldblatt’s translated versions.As the Mo Yan’s only translator for English speaking countries,Howard Goldblatt’s years of perseverance on translating and publishing Mo Yan’s works have built the overseas market for Chinese literature and introduced the Chinese contemporary novels to the whole world.The author found some improper and inaccurate translations after a perusal of Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out.In this paper,the author selected some mistranslation samples from Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out and tried to explore the source.Such analysis is not only aimed at warning the Chinese translation academy,but also focused on the discussion about Chinese cultural translation strategies.
