The Transmission of Home Economics by Japanese and American Educators in China in the Early 20th Century——A Case Study of Ideal Womanhood by Utako Shimoda and Educational Home Economics of Columbia University

Abstract: In the beginning of the 20th century, Japanese educational concept of home economics spreads rapidly across China, with the ideal womanhood proposed by Utako Shimoda on the top list. The educational concept of home economics proposed by Columbia University comes into China at the beginning of the Republic of China; at this time, the idea is open, and it provides the soil for the growth of modern home economics education of Columbia University. The two concepts confront till the establishment of the Chinese curriculum in 1922. Then, Japanese concept declines, while the Columbia concept develops to a new stage.
