The Widespread Rise of City Buildings in the Song Dynasty

Abstract: The Song Dynasty was an important period for the large-scale emergence of commercial buildings in ancient China,with buildings being widely constructed,especially street facing and cross street buildings.The citys buildings,including restaurants,teahouses,flag pavilions,brothels,etc.,have flourished,with not only a large quantity and scale,but also high service quality.With official support and participation,a new era of urban development has been opened up.The city building has become a landmark building and a place name,driving the development of the local economy and providing other social services.Traditional cuisine is mainly formed in the city building.Fanlou is a symbol of the city building,and later generations regarded it as a symbol of the prosperity of Dongjing in the Northern Song Dynasty.It has been rebuilt three times in different places,which is rare in history.“Nao Fanlou” has also become a famous Southern Song tune in the Yuan and Ming dynasties.The powerful city buildings have transformed commercial activities into three dimensions,promoted the upgrading of mass consumption,improved the urban quality and residents’ quality of life,and thus also enhanced the quality of commercial and leisure entertainment in Chinese civilized cities.
